Three East Alton businesses sustained damage in a three alarm fire at East Alton Plaza on Sunday night, and at least two of them remain closed today. The blaze started in the rear part of the space that houses Aaron's Rentals and that part of the building sustained heavy smoke, heat and water damage and the business remains closed.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security office also remains closed today after the business sustained heavy smoke damage. It will remained closed until the facility can be repaired. Anyone who needs unemployment information is directed to go to the Glen Carbon office, located at 50 Kreige Farm Road or to call 618-656-6100. A third business, Illinois Whole Sale Carpet also suffered smoke damage and insurance agents are scheduled to visit that business today according to the East Alton Fire Department.

Crews from seven different stations were on scene at the height of the blaze. The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical, however it remains under the investigation of the East Alton Fire Department and Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office.
