A handful vehicle burglaries have been reported in a few Godfrey neighborhoods in recent weeks.  In most cases the vehicles were left unlocked, and many in law enforcement agree this should be a common-sense reminder to lock your car even if you think you are in a nice neighborhood.

Lieutenant Chris Tharp of the Madison County Sheriff's Department tells The Big Z most of these types of thefts are crimes of opportunity, when the thieves see valuables left out in the open.

The burglaries were reported in the Summefield and River Aire subdivisions, but other recent break-ins in the spring took place in Rock Gate.  Police say sometimes all burglars need to see is a wire from an electronic device that suggests other valuable items may be inside, making your car a target.
