Getting rid of bulk items has been a difficult task for Alton residents since Allied Waste went to the automated trash pick-up this spring. With that in mind the city is partnering with Republic Services/Allied Waste to give city residents a time and a place to bring their old furniture, appliances, clothes and scrap metal. The old Alton Landfill will be open August 11 from 8am until Noon to accept those items.
Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst says this will help out nearly anyone who needs to get rid of those items, as most people have busy schedules.
You cannot recycle concrete, shingles, construction debris, loose trash, trash in bags and cardboard boxes, tires, and other household hazardous materials. Also, no trailers, stake-bed trucks or box trucks will be permitted to bring their loads to the landfill. Waste must be below the top of the truck for standard pick-up trucks.
