Interstate 270 was closed for several hours in both directions on Monday during a bomb scare at Mercy Hospital in west St. Louis County. Authorities say two suspicious bags were found after a patient was brought to the emergency room on Monday morning, prompting a partial evacuation of the facility.
An employee that was checking in the patient spotted the suspicious items and took the bags outside to a sidewalk and nearby helipad and called police. Part of the facility was evacuated and some patients were moved to other areas of the hospital. Interstate 270 was closed for about three hours between Ladue Road and Interstate 64 and the emergency department was closed to incoming patients. Police bomb squad responded and found cell phones wired together inside one bag, which was destroyed by authorities. A second bag contained clothing and tennis balls. The patient who brought in the bags is being questioned and is reportedly cooperating with police. He was apparently brought to Mercy for a mental health evaluation.
