Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and therefore, an increase in boating activity usually follows. As such, officials with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources wants boaters to stay safe. Conservation Police Commander Joe Morelock says a good place to start is by taking one of the state’s boating safety courses.
That’s required for kids ages 12 through 17 if they want to drive a boat. He says once you’re onboard, wearing a life jacket is also a good idea.
Conservation police will be out in force this weekend checking for boaters not wearing a life jacket, and for anyone operating a boat or any other watercraft while under the influence. For more tips and information about the safety courses, follow the link: www.dnr.illinois.gov
