The Southwestern Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross is still asking the public to donate blood at an upcoming blood drive. The American Red Cross issued an appeal to all blood types a few weeks ago, saying there is an urgent need for all blood types, especially O negative, A negative and B negative. While that plea has brought in some more donors, even more are needed to get through the rest of the summer.
Summer is traditionally a slow time for donations, as families go out of town on vacation. One local volunteer, Dick Karns, is the exception. He has donated over 200 pints of blood in his lifetime, including one special donation several years ago.
Blood drives will take place at Lewis & Clark Community College today, and at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Alton on August 7. For a full list of drives in Madison and Macoupin counties, click here: www.redcrossblood.org
