The Alton Main Street organization is taking on the leadership of the downtown Alton Block Parties this year, and the Alton City Council Committee of the Whole has given preliminary approval to the three dates and a pair of companion events. The dates this year will be June 15, July 20, and August 17. The All-Wheels Car Show will be held on June 16, and a trio of sidewalk sales will be held on the same dates, beginning early in the day.
The parties will still be held on West Third Street, between State and Piasa, also closing off a block of Belle Street between Mac's, Hayner Library, and the Riverbender.com Community Center. First Ward Alderman Jim Ryan is looking forward to seeing how the changes work out.
The parties will be held from 4-10pm with kids activities in the first part, and bands playing from 7-10. The Committee of the Whole also approved a 90 day contract for Phil Roggio to remain with the city as a consultant. He will not be re-appointed as the Director of Development and Housing under the new administration. These and other issues will be dealt with by the full council tomorrow night at 7:30.
