A census of things that fly is underway.

The Christmas Bird Count is a production of the Audubon Society.

“They draw circles across the country. They're 15-mile-wide circles, and one person is in charge of each circle. They recruit bird watchers,” says Tom Clay, executive director of the Illinois group.

“We want species, and we also want totals,” he adds. “If you see 35 European starlings in your back yard, we want that 35.”

This is the 116th event, running Dec. 14-Jan. 5.
