A bill introduced by an Illinois congressman aims to cut down on government waste. The Government Transformation Act would establish a commission to make services more efficient and economical by eliminating those offering duplicate services. U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-East Moline, pictured) points out that numerous studies have picked up on redundancies in these services.

“Every year, what happens is those conclusions are largely ignored,” said Bustos. The bill is part of a broader legislative package called Make Government Work. The package is being spearheaded by the bipartisan “No Labels” group, which includes six members of Congress from Illinois. “My hope is all of these will be viewed as such common sense pieces of the legislation,” said Bustos, “that none of them would even think that any of them would deserve a Democrat or Republican label.”
Bustos emphasized that the goal of her bill is to eliminate redundancies, not cut jobs or eliminate essential services.
