An Illinois State Police Trooper made a stop for what was initially thought to be a speeding violation recently, but that turned into a large drug bust. 27-year-old Thomas Arthur Debakker Jr. of California was arrested and charged with possession of 72 pounds of cannabis, allegedly found in the trunk of his car. The estimated street value is $359,000.

The trooper stopped Debakker's 2012 Chevrolet Malibu Thursday morning just before 9am on Interstate 70 near Highland for speeding. After noticingsuspicious behavior from Debakker, the trooper called an ISP K-9 to the scene. Police say the dog picked up the scent of an illegal substance coming from the trunk of the vehicle which led to the alleged discovery of the pot in three duffel bags. Illinois State Police troopers are averaging about one big bust a month over the past three months. Debakker is being held in the Madison County jail on a $200,000 bond.
