Nearly 8 kilograms of powder cocaine never made it to the street, thanks to a drug bust this week in southeast Madison County. 24-year-old Darrallyn Smoot and 28-year-old Kenyon R. Walton, both of Cincinnati, Ohio, were arrested for drug trafficking. They are currently being held in the Madison County Jail pending federal charges.
The two were stopped for speeding and following too closely on Interstate 70 near Pierron, which is just east of Highland, according to Illinois State Police Trooper Mike Link.
The trooper that made the stop became suspicious and requested a K-9 unit which "hit" on something inside the SUV. A subsequent search revealed nearly 800-thousand dollars worth of cocaine, wrapped in seven cellophane bundles.
