The SIU-Edwardsville School of Dental Medicine is one step closer to renovations after the SIU Board of Trustees approved bids for several phases of the $9.5-million project. The site has been prepped and work should begin soon. It will take a little over a year to do the construction and another month to move equipment into the new facility.
Rich Walker, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Administration, says students will be using the new facility by the spring of 2014.
The five vendors that submitted the winning bids are all from the region, which Walker says just happened to work out that way. When dealing with projects they fund themselves, the school traditionally looks for local vendors, but when state money is involved, the low bid must be accepted.
