A 46-year-old Riverbend resident sustained serious injuries when he was hit by at least one, and possibly two vehicles earlier this week as he was riding his bicycle. The accident happened just after 3:30pm on Monday in the 5,800 block of Humbert Road in Godfrey. The preliminary indication is that he may have been riding against the flow of traffic.
Bicyclists have a set of laws they must follow, just like motorists. Captain Mike Dixon of the Madison County Sheriff's Department says one of the most important is that a bicyclist must travel in the same direction as traffic on the right hand side of the roadway:
He says the bicyclist appears to have been clipped by the mirror of one car, and then hit by a second, but says at this stage of the investigation it is not clear who was at fault. The man was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital with broken bones and a head injury, but is expected to survive. The accident remains under investigation. The names of those involved have not been released.
