A larger water main is being installed along a portion of Belle Street in Alton, so if you travel through that area you might want to find another route.  Work could begin as early as today on a project to replace the existing 6-inch main with a new 8-inch main from Mitchell Street to 20th Street.

Illinois American Water Company spokesman Karen Cooper tells The Big Z the work will result in periodic road closures.

But she says even with the detours, there will be ways for local traffic to get in and out.  Cooper says as soon as they receive a final permit from the EPA, work will begin.  The contractor on the project, Widman Construction, will have until November 1 to finish the job.
