The Tree of Lights, Red Kettle Campaign of the Salvation Army is underway, and many bell ringers will be seen and heard outside stores and shopping centers in the River Bend this weekend, and through the rest of the Christmas season. The kettles were typically placed after Thanksgiving, but in recent years have be put out beforehand to meet increasing demand.
Alton Salvation Army Captain Randy Tooley says despite the tough economic times, he still sees more people step up to ring who haven't done it before:
Tooley says the addition of the new Wal-Mart in Godfrey will allow two more bell ringers to be in place between now and Christmas, and hopes the mail campaign will also be successful. The goal this year for the local Salvation Army is $108,000. Z-1570 will once again host its Children's Day broadcast, coming up on December 13.
