The Alton State House Square beautification project enters its final phase next week. Pride, Inc. has a plan to redo the landscaping at the intersection of Central Avenue, College Avenue, and OSF St. Anthony's Hospital. The trees were pulled out earlier this year, and the reconstruction of the area will begin with a groundbreaking ceremony next Wednesday.
Alton Park & Recreation Executive Director Mike Haynes tells The Big Z Pride is sprucing up the area as part of the organization's 50 year anniversary celebration.

The redesign was done partially to ease the burden of upkeep, as the flower beds will in theory be easier to work with. Nearly 200 years ago, State House Square was being pitched to state lawmakers as a future site for the state capital.
