The Better Business Bureau is sounding the alarm about unscrupulous contractors who may be creating a custom scam aimed at you. This is the time of year many homeowners consider improvements or repairs. BBB Investigator Bill Smith says that you should get at least three estimates, from different companies for hiring someone and that you shouldn't automatically accept the lowest bid.
Smith also recommends that you ask for a contract, even if the firm does not typically write them, because that agreement will be the only way to defend yourself if the work isn't done properly. He also tells The Big Z you should read it.

And he says you should never pay the full amount until the work is done, so that you have some leverage in case of dispute. For more information or services provided by the BBB you can call 314-645-3300 or by following the link: http://www.bbb.org
