A stretch of the Mississippi River had to be closed after more than a hundred barges broke free of their moorings in South St. Louis County.  The runaway barges broke loose Saturday and slammed into the Jefferson Barracks Bridge multiple times, forcing officials to briefly close all lanes of traffic to look for damage.

Most of the barges have been recovered, although nine of them filled with coal did end up sinking.  The JB bridge was closed for safety inspections after some barges struck the bridge but has since reopened to traffic.
