A bargaining session is planned for today in an attempt to settle the differences between the Alton School District and the Alton Education Association. The teacher’s union voted to file an intent to strike notice with the school district following the rejection of the latest contract offer on October 27th.
Union membership voted 94% against the contract offer, and the vote for the strike notice was 95% in favor. Ric Stephenson, Regional Director of the IEA, tells The Big Z the main sticking points are salary and fully paid health insurance benefits.

The 10-day intent to strike notice is required before any teacher’s union can hit the picket lines. District administrator Chris Norman has stated the district is hopeful a deal can be reached before any pickets are set up.
