The annual "Back to School Stay in School" event sponsored by the Alton branch of the NAACP is coming up in a few weeks. The event begins at 10am at James Killion Park at Salu in Alton on Saturday, August 9. This is the 16th year the Alton chapter has provided school supplies to students in Alton. Parents must accompany their child to the event to receive the supplies.
Organizers hope to get enough donations to send every kid hope with a backpack, in addition to the other supplies. NAACP President James Gray says the event will feature the giveaway, a picnic lunch and a speech from 2011 Illinois Teacher of the Year Annice Brave.
