The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is stressing that back-to-school plans should include preparing for an emergency. Amidst school supply and clothing purchases, now is the perfect time to talk to your child about what to do if an emergency arises, according to agency spokesman Patti Thompson.

Those messages should be short and simple, such as "Are you ok? I'm ok." Thompson says parents should also make sure emergency contact information is on file at their child's school and also pre-authorize a friend or relative to pick up your kids in case of emergency.
