The Alton City Council Committee of the Whole has given preliminary approval to a plan to close a portion of a downtown street in a couple of weeks for a concert. The Atlanta Rhythm Section will perform on a stage set up on Belle Street in front of Mac's Time Out Lounge on May 7. That block will be closed to traffic for the day.
The Smokin' Oldies Band and The Glendale Rider's will open the show. Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau President Brett Stawar tells The Big Z it's part of the local celebration of the Kentucky Derby.

The street closure will last from 6am May 7 until 6am May 8. Another event is planned for the same area July 3. The Committee also approved a closure of the 100 block of Third Street on June 11th to facilitate an art show. The full council will meet Wednesday night to consider these and other issues.
