Officials with the University of Illinois are unveiling their $160-million plan to completely renovate Assembly Hall in Champaign. Reconstruction on the 50-year-old building will commence next near. Among the plans are the additions of air conditioning and luxury suites, along with expanded student seating. Capacity would drop from 17,200 to 15,200 when the work is complete in 2016.
University officials say the final approval must still come from the board of trustees, but about three quarters of the renovations will be paid for from private donations. Work is scheduled to begin in March of 2014 and would work around the men's and women's basketball team schedules for the following year. Naming rights for the building are also being considered.
