The heavy rains here and to the north are expected to push the Mississippi River above flood stage in parts of Illinois and Missouri in the next week. Local governments are watching river levels in Grafton and Alton as the crests for both towns are expected by late this week week.
But as of right now, Alton Deputy Fire Chief Mark Harris doesn’t expect the river to move into Downtown.

According to predictions from the U.S. Geological Survey, Alton is looking at a Friday crest of 27 feet, 6 feet above flood stage. Motorists heading into Missouri should not experience any difficulties, as water doesn’t begin to come across the lower lanes of Route 67 until the river stage in Alton hits 30 feet. The Mississippi River is expected to crest Friday in Grafton at 21.9 feet, which is 3.9 feet above flood stage.
