A Godfrey woman with a passion for local history has died. Judy Hoffman, who at one time hosted a radio show on The Big Z, died last Thursday at her home at the age of 73. Hoffman was married to the first mayor of Godfrey, the late Lars Hoffman.
In 2005, Judy Hoffman published the book “God’s Portion: Godfrey, Illinois 1817-1865,” about the settling of the area now known as Godfrey, and gave numerous talks about her book, and local history, before and after its publication. Her afternoon radio show on the Big Z entitled “Hey Jude” focused on local history and current events. She was also active with the Riverbend Head Start and Family Services, the Hayner Library Foundation, and the board of the Alton Cemetery. She was also a past YWCA Woman of Distinction and was also the recipient of the Studs Turkel Humanities Award. A memorial visitation will take place Friday from 2-8pm at the Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.
