James MeeksGov. Bruce Rauner’s assertion that he doesn’t have a social agenda may be put to the test by one of his first appointments.  The Rev. James Meeks, a former state senator, is Rauner’s choice for chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education. Meeks is anti-gay: He marshaled opposition to the same-sex marriage bill in 2013, and once called homosexuality “an evil sickness.”

The sponsor of the same-sex marriage law, State Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago), hopes Meeks addresses those comments. “He needs to publicly acknowledge that every person in the state of Illinois is an equal citizen,” Harris said, “without regard to race, without regard to religion, without regard to their sexual orientation, that our schools need to serve them all equally, and respect their dignity.”
Harris won’t speculate as to whether this indicates a shift on social issues by the Rauner administration, only predicting “the proof will be in the pudding.”
