A fire broke out early Sunday morning inside Country Meadows Antiques Shop on East Broadway in Alton.  No one was injured, but the business sustained significant smoke and water damage, following fire fighting efforts that apparently saved the building.

A passing motorist reportedly called 911 when she spotted smoke and a broken out window and Alton fire crews and Alton Police arrived shortly after 6:00am.   Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold tells the Big Z, crews were able to knock down the flames fairly quickly:

Authorities are calling the origin of the fire suspicious and an investigation is underway.  Two blocks of East Broadway were closed during the incident Sunday morning.  The business owner, Pam Voyles, tells the Big Z, she's not sure when the business will reopen.  Insurance adjustors are expected to visit the building today.
