The Macoupin County Sheriff is warning motorists a police impersonator is still on the loose in the county. The most recent incident happened near Route 16 near Stagecoach Road on Monday. An 18-year-old driver reports a vehicle tried to pull her over after approaching from behind at a high rate of speed.
The suspect then began to swerve back and forth, and eventually passed her and slowed to about 30 m.p.h. The victim passed the vehicle, he passed her again with lights flashing, and then sped off toward Royal Lakes. Macoupin County Sheriff Don Albrecht says there are some red flags you can watch for if you suspect you are being approached by a police impersonator.
He says if you suspect you are being approached by an impersonator, you have the right to proceed to a safe public location, or to call the Sheriff's Department to ask if the person following is actually law enforcement. The vehicle in question is described as a late model, silver, squared off four-door passenger car with dark windows and red & blue flashing lights in the grill area. If you know anything about these incidents, call the Macoupin County Sheriff's Department at 217-854-2131.
