Dozens of animals were rescued from a home in an upscale neighborhood in Edwardsville. Police responding to complaints from neighbors in the Country Club View subdivision discovered 60 cats and three dogs inside a home. One of the cats was dead, and one of the dogs had to be euthanized. Charges against the owner of the home, who has not been named, are pending.
Edwardsville Police executed a search warrant at 73 Birdie Court on Monday, in cooperation with the Madison County State's Attorney and Metro East Humane Society. In addition to the animals recovered, authorities say six cats managed to find refuge in inaccessible areas of the home. Edwardsville Public Works personnel declared the residence "uninhabitable." Humane Society officials say they will continue to examine the animals and will prepare to place some up for adoption soon. They described most to be well tempered and hungry, with some in excellent health and others needing extra medical care.
