Alton Middle School eighth graders are working on a service learning project sponsored by Youth Service America. The project acronym is REDUCE, Recycling Electronic Devices Unites with Community Education. Students developed a survey to determine how much people know about e-waste and its dangers. Students will analyze data and project goals for Global Youth Service Day, April 21, 2012 when AMS will collect recyclable items in the school parking lot from 1 to 4 pm.

On March 20th they will visit the Illinois Evironmental Protection Agency Laboratory in Springfield where air, soil, and water samples are tested.  Students will generate flyers to post throughout the community. They will also make presentations at elementary schools to spread the word about recycling.  The students, and adult supporters, were here at Z-1570 to talk about the project earlier this week.
