If your child is heading to college and leaving home for the first time, there are a handful of tips the local electric utility wants them to know.  If they are putting electricity in their name, they may soon learn the benefits of efficiency, and may have to learn new habits.

Ameren spokesman Brian Bretsch tells The Big Z one simple efficiency is learning to turn off televisions, computers, gaming consoles, and any other electronics that are left on overnight.

He also suggests using a programmable thermostat to control the temperature when no one is there, only running a full dishwasher, and turning off the lights when you leave a room.
