It took a recess and a number of votes but the Alton City Council did get a budget passed for this fiscal year during last night’s regularly scheduled meeting. At the crux of the debate was the potential naming of a Deputy Chief for the Alton Police Department. Alderman Gary Flemming proposed an amendment preventing that from happening, an idea Mayor Brant Walker adamantly disagreed with.

The initial vote on the amendment was 4-to-4 after Mayor Walker envoked his right to vote on the matter. After a recess, the amendment was revisited and approved with the understanding that the total monies allocated to the Alton Police Department would remain the same and that a Deputy Chief may not be named without another amendment to the budget.
Walker says the budget includes a deficit of at least $850,000 but is confident the City will be able to manage the it’s finances as they have in the past and end the year with a balanced budget.
