While temperatures remain cooler than normal for August, officials in Alton are already thinking about the upcoming winter season. Last month, the Illinois Department of Transportation solicited bids for salt for municipalities in Madison County. Alton Public Works Director Bob Barnhart says the first round of bids was not as promising as they had hoped, so a second round of bids are currently being accepted.
He is optimistic that it will lead to the City getting a better price.

The City currently has about 1000 tons of salt on hand and Barnhart says they would like to have closer to 5,000 tons before winter. He expects to receive word regarding the latest round of bids before the end of this month.
