After three weeks to reconsider, all but one Alton alderman voted to implement the trash collection rate hike that was defeated by a 4-3 margin at the October 23 meeting.  The measure will raise rates from $17.40 to $18.10 per month, and another 4 percent on Oct. 1, 2014, and every Oct. 1 after that.  This passes on the rate increases the city pays to Allied Waste that was negotiated when the contract was agreed upon three years ago.

Alton Mayor Brant Walker says this is the third year of the nine year contract.

Walker comments

Walker says he believes the city will still have to eat the cost of one month's difference in billing, but there will be no retroactive bills sent out.  In other council business, ordinances were passed to clean up the language clarifying the process for the public to address the council at any of its meetings, and also pertaining to the suspension of the rules and making that process falls within the letter of the law.
