An Alton street will soon be closed in an effort to bring a stop to illegal dumping. Market Street between 6th and 8th Streets has been a haven over the years for anyone looking for a place to get rid of large bulk items such as sofas, appliances, and even complete bathroom furnishings.

Alderwoman Carolyn MacAfee, who also chairs the Alton Beautification and Clean City Committee, sponsored the resolution. She says the property owner is tired of the dumping, since he is the one who either cleans it up or gets fined. Either guardrails or jersey barriers will be placed there in about a month.
