Barricades are up on Broadway in Alton as Illinois American Water has begun the process of repairing damage caused by water main breaks in mid-April. It was called a “pressure event” at the time, which apparently resulted in a series of five leaks and subsequent damage underneath the pavement.
And that is why Broadway will be closed between Market and Piasa Streets until further notice. There is also work happening around the old St. Patrick’s School. Portions of Central and 5th Streets will be closed through the end of the week to facilitate the installation of the new fire suppression water line that is being installed. The school is undergoing a massive renovation to facilitate new programs offered by Lewis & Clark Community College.
