A Madison County judge is sending an Alton man to prison for what may wind up being the rest of his life after a jury in April found him guilty of two counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child. 48-year-old James A. Steele was found guilty after the jury deliberated for about 90 minutes. His victim was 5-years-old at the time of the crimes in December of 2012 when he was in a relationship with her mother.
The mother reported Steele to Alton Police, which initiated an investigation. Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons tells The Big Z the testimony of the victim played an important part in convicting Steele. Steele was sentenced to 40-years in prison - 20 years on each of the two counts, of which he will be required to serve at least 85% of the sentences which will run consecutively.
