Alton is hoping to use a pair of grants to repair some aging park facilities. The city is applying for a $2.5-million grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and another $111,000 grant through Madison County.
Alton Park & Recreation Executive Director Bob Barnhart says the smaller grant could be used to spruce up the ball diamond at Rock Spring Park.

He says it would also be nice to get the diamond at Northside Park up to league standards. As for the larger grant, Barnhart says replacing the 30-year-old underground wiring along the roadway at Gordon Moore Park is among the improvements, if the city is awarded that money.
