Several road projects within the city of Alton that are funded in part by the state of Illinois will shut down on Thursday unless there’s a last minute budget deal. The Illinois Department of Transportation notified local communities last week that it would shut down all state road projects on June 30.
That means the following projects in Alton will not see any work starting July 1: the College Avenue roadway and sidewalk updates, the Scenic Overlook at Riverview Park, and the Flood Memorial Project along Landmarks. Barnhart says Alton will still have some motor fuel tax money and other funding to use for day-to-day road operations, but larger projects will be on hold until state lawmakers find a compromise.
