The United States Postal Service continues its search for a new building, as its location on Belle Street in Alton will be demolished due to soil contamination. The land the building sits on was once used by Alton Gas & Electric, which built its gas plant in 1855. Through the course of several decades and other tenants, the ground became contaminated with coal and tar residue contamination.
Ameren purchased the land a dozen years ago, and spokesman Brian Bretsch tells The Big Z they have been looking at ways to clean up the property without having to tear the building down.

A representative from the U.S. Postal Service will address the Alton City Council Wednesday night to explain the process they are going through in finding a new location to serve Downtown Alton.
