Alton Police met with a group of citizens Monday at the request of 4th Ward Alderwoman Alice Martin. Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons and other officers met with Alton’s Coalition of Concerned Citizens to establish a positive relationship between Alton Police and the African American community in response to events taking place in Ferguson, Missouri.
Alderwoman Martin says the meeting was an important step to take in response to the shooting death of 18-year old Michael Brown.

Martin also says she does not believe there are currently any major issues between Alton Police and the African American community and that she doesn’t expect to see any violence spread to this side of the Mississippi River.
A follow up meeting will be held for community and church leaders on Monday, September 8th at Monroe Memorial Church in Alton. For more information on that meeting, contact Martin at 462-5665.
