An alleged sexual assault last week has Alton Police looking for clues and the victim’s family asking for justice. But in addition to wanting to find the woman’s attackers, an online petition has been posted calling for the officer that took her to jail to also be held accountable. That petition sparked a firestorm of controversy, and a response from the police department.
A woman claiming to be the victim’s mother posted the online petition, claiming the officer that notified her said the victim “got what (she) deserved,” and also that the victim was arrested and charged with public intoxication and indecent exposure. Emily Hejna, Public Information Officer for the police department, says the woman was first taken to the hospital, where she was “extremely uncooperative” with the staff, and threatened to walk out. Hejna says the woman was taken to jail for her own safety while the mother could be located. Hejna asks for level-headedness when posting in social media.

The woman, who sustained multiple injuries in the attack, was not charged with public indecency, but was held on the intoxication charge while the mother could be located, according to Hejna. The assault happened on Thursday, April 24 at about 10:30pm near the intersection of Rockwell and Amelia Streets. Anyone with further information on the assault is urged to contact the police department at 463-3505 x 234.
