The continued focus of the Alton Police department is to wipe out the drug trade and improve quality of life issues for Alton residents. At a recent gathering at the Donald E. Sandidge Law Enforcement Center, the city showed crime stats for 2012 that indicated significant progress toward those goals. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois says there is no one reason why crime is trending downward.
Stephen Wiggington (pictured, right) says his office has prosecuted 37 drug cases over the past four or five years that originated in Alton.
He says in addition to police work, cleaning up neighborhoods and keeping the citizens involved has been a major help. He says this goes back to an old law-enforcement adage called the "broken window theory," that basically says if a neighborhood looks like it is in a state of decline, crime is likely to increase.
