Most fireworks are actually illegal without proper permitting in Illinois, and Alton Police stayed busy confiscating the explosives and writing citations over the Independence Day weekend. Firefighters also remained at the ready, responding to a dumpster fire in the 700 block of Oakwood Avenue – the same place where fire crews came under attack by some people shooting fireworks a few years ago.

She says one incident saw a 16-year-old boy suffer severe injuries to his hand, which may lead to amputation. Illinois is one of only four states that ban all but wire or wood stick sparklers and other novelty items. Most states, including Missouri, allow some or all types of fireworks allowed by federal regulations, but allow for strict local controls
