Three people were killed, including an Alton man, after a brawl outside a teen club in East St. Louis early Sunday morning. It happened at the VIP Club on State Street. According to police, the fight started inside the club and spilled over into the parking lot. The St. Clair County Coroner's Office reports 21 year old Henry Byrd III of the 1100 block of 7th Street in Alton, was killed along with two others, in the incident. Two others remain hospitalized.
Police have arrested three people in connection with the shooting. According to authorities, the young people were attending a teen night at the club and no alcohol was being served. All teens were searched before entering the building, but police say an argument inside the club resulted in two groups of teens being kicked out, and that's when it is believed guns were retrieved from nearby vehicles and the shooting began. Also killed in the fight was a junior basketball standout at East St. Louis High, 19 year old Alonzo Phifer. The identity of the third victim, a 20 year old from St. Louis, has not been released. East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks, who has publicly clashed with U.S. Senator Dick Durbin in recent months over increasing violence in the city, said late night club hours did not play a role in the shootings. The shootings took place around 2:15am Sunday.
