An Alton man will serve one year in prison for the role he played in a "check  kiting" scam. That sentence was handed down Friday against 45-year old Jody D. Markel who deposited more than 200 checks totaling more than two-million dollars between bank accounts belonging to the two companies that he ran. Banks lost more than 200-thousand dollars during the scheme.

In addition to that prison term, Markel will also have to pay a restitution amount of $144,000.
