A nice breeze and sunshine greeted the thousands of spectators who watched the 148th edition of the Alton Memorial Day Parade on Monday. The Alton Optimists Club was honored as the Grand Marshall organization this year, in thanks for the groups many years of service to the youth of the community.
The parade also featured the Alton High Marching 100 and the Alton Middle School Band, an Alton Police Honor Guard, a local fire department honor guard, scout troops, veterans, elected officials, local churches, businesses and local citizens. The parade ended with a brief service at the Upper Alton Cemetery. Bethalto held its annual Memorial Day parade through town, and a sunset service was held last evening at the Alton National Cemetery.
