After about a year of little public discussion, the possibility of a new connector road between Alton and Godfrey is getting a lot of attention. Representatives with the design team addressed the Alton City Council last night, and a meeting will take place today with members of the Riverbend Growth Association. (Note: a previous story said this was a public event, it is a private event for RBGA members)
An Alton-Godfrey Expressway may one day run from U.S. 67 south of the Alton Square to north of Route 255. The plan was re-introduced to the public at a Godfrey Village Board meeting last month, and was updated again last night. There hasn't been a lot of progress in the last three weeks, as the process of taking the pulse of the public has just begun.
That's Steve Coates, consultant on the project. Future traffic projections show there will eventually be a need for another north-south connection between U.S. 67 and Illinois 255. The first step in that process is the completion of studies, and the eventual creation of a legal document that can withstand various challenges in court.
