The Alton - Godfrey Fireworks on the Mississippi is scheduled for later today. In recent years, the festival has featured music on the stage of the Alton Amphitheater, and this year Borderline will be playing country music from 6pm until the fireworks begin, and again after the fireworks until around 10:30. For the first time in recent memory, the Clark Bridge will remain open during the show.
But no pedestrian traffic will be allowed on the bridge, and cars will not be allowed to park there either. Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold says the fireworks will be shot off from the Missouri side of the river at the Lincoln Shields Recreation Area.
Alton Park & Recreation Director Brad Cunningham says if you stick around for more music after the fireworks wrap up, you should be able to avoid much of the traffic.
There will be food and drink for sale on the grounds. The vendors will begin selling their wares at 5pm. The concert starts at 6:00, and is free. The fireworks begin around 9:15pm. In case the weather would cause a postponement, everything would be moved to July 5.
Serving the areas of Alton, Godfrey, East Alton, Wood River, Roxana, Edwardsville, Jerseyville, Brighton, Bethalto, Grafton, Granite City, Hartford, Highland, Troy, Fairview Heights, Belleville and the surrounding cities.
