The murder of an 11-year-old at an Alton housing complex earlier this year has spawned an effort by the city's police department to reach out to more residents through the sport the young man loved.  Romell Jones was an up-and-coming basketball player.  He died of a single gunshot wound to the chest while standing outside the community center at the Alton Acres Housing Complex.

Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons tells The Big Z the whole community is invited to the YWCA on April 2 for "Ballin' With A Cop."

Simmons says he hopes to break through the "no snitch" policy that is still prevalent in some neighborhoods and convince citizens to work with police to make the city safer.  "Ballin' With A Cop" will be held from 10am-1pm on Saturday, April 2.
